When Is Spring?
I’ve heard a lot of talk lately about “Meteorological Spring” versus “Calendar Spring” lately for some reason, so I thought I’d take a look into it.
My whole life, we’ve always gone by the calendar, which this year is March 20th. But recently I’ve heard people discuss this thing called Meteorological Spring, which is March 1st every year.
Honestly, I think this is just people trying to pretend it’s Spring sooner than it’s really happening. I’ve lived in Wisconsin my whole life, and I’ve lived long enough to know that Spring in Wisconsin rarely begins on either of those days.
As I write this, I’m looking out the window at a giant pile of snow in our parking lot that’s 12 feet tall and about 40 feet long. Does that inspire thoughts of Spring for you?
Me either.
So my answer is simple. Does it feel like Spring? When you think back to the basics of what makes the seasons stand out for what they are, is what you’re experiencing fit at least most of that description?
Because if you ask me right now, I don’t care if people say it’s “Meteorological Spring”. It’s not Spring yet.
As far as March 20th goes, ask me then, and I’ll tell you if that feels like Spring when we get there.
