Daylight Savings – Let’s “Spring Forward” one more time, and never again.
I say it every year, and I’ll say it again. We turned the clocks back, just as we do every Fall. Now let’s “Spring Forward” one more time this Spring, and not turn back.
Daylight Savings is always a topic of debate twice a year, and every person has their own feelings on what we should do. Some say we should keep doing it. Some say we should stop. But at what point do we stop? Some say we should stay in Standard Time, where we are now. Others like myself, argue that Daylight Savings time is the best place to be, so that is the case I shall be making today.
One thing I’m not willing to give up is the late sunsets that we get in the Summer. It’s one of the best things about the warmer months. It’s great to have cookouts or campfire parties in the yard, and not have the sun go down until almost 9pm. Even when you aren’t partaking in some festivities with friends. It’s still great to come home from work and have 3 to 4 full hours of sunlight, so we can do something with our evening and we don’t have to feel like we spent the entire daylight hours at our jobs. We have a few hours to do yard work, or to even just sit out and have a beer on the porch.
And while we’re at it, the sun wouldn’t go down so damn early in the winter either. As I write this, it’s 4:30pm. The sun is already setting, and will be down completely in less than an hour. In a month, the sun will already have been down by now. Who actually likes living like this? It’s easily one of the worst things about the winter months.
It’s bad enough for people who work the 9-5. For people who work night shift, it’s worse. I remember when I used to work nights at a restaurant. There would be several days at a time where the only sunshine I saw was the few minutes in the car on my way to work. The rest of my winter spent in darkness or artificial light. That’s not good for people, and has been proven to cause depression.
In short, Standard Time sucks, and anyone who says it’s good is insane.
So let’s Spring Forward this Spring, and then never turn back.
