Three things to do in & Around River City this weekend

After a brutally cold day yesterday, it’ll start warming up today & continue through the weekend. Might even get back into the 40’s on Sunday.

With the new puppy, we’ll probably spend most of our time at home, keeping an eye on her and continuing to work on her potty training. We do have some dinner plans with some friends tonight, and I think we’ll head to the Kriskindlmarkt in Sparta on Saturday.

If you’re looking for something to do in the area this weekend, here’s a few suggestions:

FRIDAY – FRIDAY NIGHT COMEDY @ THE MAIN – AN EVENT SPACE

In case you missed it, The Main – An Event Space, one of our favorite spots in downtown La Crosse, is closing their doors at the end of the year. Unfortunately, times are tough for everyone, and they recently announced they would cease operation. But, they’ve got a few more events coming up in the next two weeks, including comedy this Friday night, featuring Steven Gillespie and Senthil Rajasekharan.

Doors for comedy at The Main open at 7pm & the show starts at 8pm. You can purchase tickets in advance online, or get them at the door if they are still available.

Steven Gillespie has appeared on Conan, and Amazon Prime’s “Inside Joke”. His second comedy album “Alive on State” reached #1 on iTunes Comedy Charts and hit the top 10 on the Billboard charts. He has also performed at some of the best festivals in country including the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, Boston Comedy Festival, 10k Laughs, and High Plains Comedy Festival in Denver, CO.

Senthil Rajasekharan started doing comedy in Minneapolis/St. Paul in 2010. He has performed at clubs, bars, and other top venues across the Midwest including: Goonie’s Comedy Club, Sisyphus Brewing, New Hope Cinema Grill and many more. He was also a featured performer at the 1st Fargo Comedy Festival and The Great Spirit Comedy Festival.

The Cookie Walk is from 7:30am until 1pm in the Parish hall featuring homemade cookies, candies, breads, pies, Scandinavian sweets, handcrafted items, and more!

They’ll also be serving breakfast(featuring egg bakes and cinnamon rolls) and lunch (homemade soup and chili). Plus, gift cards and raffles, along with door prizes every half hour!

SATURDAY NIGHT – DECEMBER CULT MOVIE NIGHT @ THE RIVOLI THEATRE

Don’t get me wrong, I love “Elf”, “A Christmas Story”, “Christmas Vacation”, and many other classic holiday films, but the wife & I also enjoy the Christmas-themed horror movies! And this Saturday night at the Rivoli Theatre & Pizzeria in downtown La Crosse, you’ve got two of the best from that genre, back-to-back!

It’s the original “Gremlins” from 1984, followed by the original “Black Christmas” from 1974!

Doors at the Rivoli open at 5pm on Saturday night, with the first film starting at 6pm, and the second movie starting a shortly after “Gremlins” finishes.

You can buy tickets in advance here, or get them at the door…but don’t be late! The Riv will have a limited amount of EXCLUSIVE Black Christmas 50th Anniversary silkscreen posters for sale! Plus, Cult Movie Night buttons & special holiday-themed cocktails at the bar!
