Metallica Could, and Should, Play the Super Bowl
Football season is over, and every year around this time, the conversation is the same….
“Why don’t they have Metallica play the halftime show?”
We’ve all heard it a million times. Hell, I’ve said it a million times. Even the band themselves don’t think it’ll ever happen. But can it actually happen? I’d argue yes.
The biggest thing driving the bus towards “yes”, is how consistently this gets talked about. Bitching about how Metallica should be in the halftime show is as much a yearly tradition as the Super Bowl itself. The urge from fans has not died, or even fizzled out. That’s the biggest thing that tells me it could happen. Fans of things don’t always get what they want. But the more we talk about it, the more it plants the seed and gives the chance for our voice to be heard.
You better believe the people that run the halftime show have heard it. It’d be impossible for them to have not by now. They know exactly how much attention it’ll get if they announce Metallica as the halftime show. And you had better believe that someone involved in the decision making wants that. The question is, when?
Last year, Lars Ulrich was in an interview and speculated that the band has about 10 years left in the tank, provided they can continue to stay healthy. It doesn’t sound like much, but that’s a pretty BIG window. Unfortunately, because of their age, it’s a window that could close dramatically fast. If they’re ever going to do it, I’d say it’d probably have to happen in the next 5 years.
Does that mean it will? No. But if the hype stays loud, it increases the probability that they’ll pull the trigger and make this happen.
Keep up the pressure, and let’s cross our fingers.
